How To Get Blue Hair

There are many not so pleasant stories from people attempting to get blue hair and end up green, or beauty adventurers achieve blue hair, but it eventually becomes green. Why is that? And how do you maintain it??? Let’s go over what you need to do before and after!

Getting blue hair and maintaining it is quite a commitment! It is a long process and takes a lot of patience.

Blue Hair: What Do I Need to Do?

Before applying your blue hair dye, your hair needs to be lightened to a platinum blonde (almost white). To read our tips for bleaching, click here.

Make sure you don’t have any yellow or orange tones in your hair! If you do, your hair is guaranteed to turn into a sea green because

YELLOW + BLUE = GREEN

To achieve platinum blond hair, you will most likely need to bleach your hair multiple times.

Ok, Platinum Blonde, CHECK! What Next?

Before you apply that gorgeous blue color, make sure you’re not allergic to it by doing a skin test!

Then, apply either petroleum jelly or coconut oil on your skin around the hairline, neck, and ears to prevent skin stains.

USEFUL TIP: If you’re worried about staining your shower, you can prevent this by also applying oil on your shower/tub. You can use any inexpensive kitchen oil such as canola or vegetable oil. After you’re done with the whole coloring process, simply wipe off.

Make sure to have gloves with you too for the dyeing process unless you want “Smurf” hands.

Once that is done, TIME TO COLOR! When applying the dye, make sure you fully saturate the hair to get the best blue hair. You can leave in the dye for about 30-45 minutes and rinse.

How To Maintain Blue Hair

Most crazy color hair dye is semi-permanent hair dye, which means it’ll fade quickly, especially if you wash it often. This is common for all semi-permanent hair colors. What most avid beauty adventurers do is:

-Try using a dry shampoo to skip washing your hair. Our experienced bold hair influencers say they wash their hair about 2-3 times a week

-When you do wash your hair, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner is A MUST! Avoid shampoos that contain sulfate or promote volume.

-Use a deep conditioner at least once a week. Your hair will be dry from bleaching, so you want to keep those gorgeous blue locks healthy by keeping them hydrated!

Optional:

-Use a leave-in treatment to keep your blue hair looking healthier

-You can also use a color-depositing shampoo to increase the duration of your blue hair

Alright, folks, that is the GIST of it! It may sound like a lot of work, but it’s actually not that bad once you get the hang of it!
