IN A SPLIT SECOND, EVERYTHING CAN CHANGE… AND SOMETIMES ALL IT TAKES IS A SPLIT DECISION.
One of the hottest new hair trends to take social media by storm is the split-dye look…Instagram and Tik Tok alike are showcasing the bright new two-toned hairstyle, and luckily for us, it’s one of the easiest looks to achieve on your own at home.
Maybe you’re indecisive when it comes to choosing a color and you can’t pick just one. Maybe you’re uber-creative and love playing around with a wide variety of shades. Or maybe you’re new to the vivid-color game and you’re just getting started by dipping your toes in the water. Whatever the case may be, and whatever look you’re going for, it’s an unbelievably easy look to achieve right from your own home.
Check out 8 of our favorite looks below for a little inspo & read on to learn how to create these split dye & ombre hair trends at home.
Create this look by using Sinful Silver and Naturals Teal
Make this dual pink all your own using Naturals Magenta + Naturals Lavender, & Add Splat's Pastel Mixer
Keep it simple and use Ombre Ocean Complete Kit with Bleach
Everyone looks great with bleached front strands with Lightening Bleach
To fully achieve the look, all you’ll need is the following:
- Lightening Bleach (included in Splat’s original color kits)
- Hair color dye(s)
- Plastic gloves
- Fine toothed comb or brush
- Old, loose clothing (in case of accidental drips)
- Vaseline or petroleum jelly
- A hand mirror
Since vivid, vibrant hair colors are best achieved on pre-lightened or bleached hair, you’ll want to lighten your hair as much as possible before you get started. If there are any yellow/brassy tones remaining, you’ll want to tone your hair first (check out our Color Science post for more about that) to get your hair as close to white as possible. This helps your new color achieve its truest results.
If you’re planning on coloring both sides of your head vibrant shades, you’ll want to bleach/lighten all over. If you’re coloring just one side, then just bleach one half. ‘Part’ of making the split-dye look stand out is by starting with a distinct part, so use a fine-toothed comb to get a sharp line and drag it from the top of your head to the nape of your neck. Section off pieces of your hair to keep them separate and to help you color your hair in sections (which helps your color apply more evenly).
Once you’re ready to color your hair, apply Vaseline or petroleum jelly along your hairline, ears and neck to protect your skin from accidental staining. Begin applying your color about an inch away from your scalp and work through to the ends before moving to your roots. By saving the roots for last, you can be more precise and controlled in order to keep your even part. When working towards the back of your head, we suggest using a hand mirror (or help from a friend!) to help you line the color up sharply. Let your color process for about 40 minutes and rinse with cold water and color-safe shampoo and conditioner.
It doesn’t get easier than that, and the best part is that you can play with an endless variety of colors. There are no rules to ‘matching’ when it comes to the split-dye trend, so don’t be afraid to put any two colors together. You can also try adding some of Splat’s Pastel Mixer to one of your color picks if you want to get lighter, brighter, candy-colored hair.
And keep in mind that you don’t even half to color your hair! You can just bleach or lighten one side of your head and still part-take in the split-dye trend by rocking a half-lightened/half-natural look.
A split-dye or ombre look is the perfect way to take the best of both worlds and put them into one. So come on! Grab a box or two of your favorite Splat shades and get coloring! It’ll be the best split decision you’ll ever make.
