How to: DIY Pink Hair - How to Get Pink Hair

Ever wondered how Instagrammers get the perfect pink hair? Ever get scared to experiment with your hair? Ever admired Kim Kardashian’s bubblegum pink hair or Kylie Jenner’s pastel pink hair? Sometimes, it can get a little scary doing it yourself but with our guidance from our in-house hair color gurus, we’ll show you how to do the perfect DIY Pink Hair!

Step 1: Drop the Perfect Base for your DIY Pink Hair

Having the perfect base is the most important step in dyeing your hair pink. The more platinum bleach blonde you are, the higher chance you’ll have flawless pink hair. To view our Bleach Blonde Tutorial

Step 2: Prevent Skin Stains by Applying Petroleum Jelly or Coconut Oil

The pros always apply coconut oil or petroleum jelly on the hairline, ears, behind the ears, and neck to prevent the skin from staining.

TIP: If you’re worried about staining your tub or sink, you can apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly on your tub or sink!

Step 3: Part your hair in 4 sections and work it!

Make sure your hair is clean and dry. After parting your hair into four sections (two in the front and two in the back), clip them up with hair clips so that you can focus on smaller areas of your hair. Wearing gloves, take one section and apply your desired pink shade from root to tip, leaving ¼ an inch away from the scalp to avoid staining. It is recommended to take about one-inch wide strands to apply color evenly. Make sure to fully saturate the hair strands by massaging the color in with your fingers, or with your applicator brush. Repeat until all sections of your hair are fully saturated! Wait about 30-45 minutes.

Step 4: Rinsing

After the processing time, rinse your hair with cool water away from your face. For long-lasting color, some people actually skip shampooing their hair and go straight to conditioner (but that’s up to you!) Make sure to rinse your hair until the water runs clear. The most exciting part of DIY Pink Hair is seeing the final results of your hair after rinsing, isn’t it?

Step 5: Maintenance

Maintaining your new DIY pink hair is not too hard. Most colorists advise using protein treatments and deep conditioners to keep hair healthy as well as using sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Colorists also advise to not shampoo your hair often and to use dry shampoo to keep your locks fresh longer.
